High heels are truly an ergonomic nightmare from which some women refuse to awaken. Any podiatrist will tell you that high heels aren’t designed for walking.
Great! Women’s shoes aren’t designed for walking…yay…we live in the 21st century!
Why high heels are so bad:
Wearing high heels cause the foot slides forward, cramming the toes into the front of the shoe. If they are worn frequently, stilettos can contribute to bunions, corns, calluses and toenail problems. Stiletto heels hit the ground with a force several times the body weight, causing knee pain. They also change the center of gravity, meaning the wearer has to arch the back to stay balanced, which can cause lower back pain.
The shoe company HBN Shoe LLC has attempted to solve the problem of harmful high heels. Their team includes a rocket scientist and a podiatrist, and together they developed “Insolia” inserts, which supposedly shift the weight back to the heel, diminishing the negative effects of wearing high heels.
Here’s what they say:
- The Insolia Weight Shift Solution restores balance and allows women in heels to return to their natural heel-toe stride.
- The Insolia Weight Shift Solution improves body alignment and results in a higher degree of ankle stability while reducing pressure on the ball of the foot.
- The Insolia Weight Shift Solution dramatically reduces leg and lower back fatigue and the pain caused by walking improperly.

So what do you think? Can the problem of high heels be solved by technology…or should we just stop wearing them?
