I stare at the computer screen for way too long every day. If you are reading this, you probably do too.
Blurred vision, frequent headaches, neck and shoulder pain, burning, watery, dry eyes…sound familiar? If so, you are showing symptoms of what optometrists call “computer vision syndrome” or CVS. Although not much is known about the long term effects of staring at the computer every day, the short term effects can be painful and annoying.
Fortunately, there are two simple tricks to remember what you need to do to protect your eyes:
1. The 3 B’s
Blink, Breathe, and take Breaks
Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away from the computer for 20 seconds
The hard part is actually following this simple advice. Whether you are trying to make a deadline or you’re just compulsively gaming, chatting, or surfing, it can be hard to train yourself to use the computer safely. For those of you die hard computer addicts, there are several different software programs that automatically reminds you when to take breaks, and even shuts down the functions of your computer during break time so you are forced to actually take a break. Taking short, frequent breaks from the computer won’t just save your eyes, it can help prevent other musular skeletal injuries as well.
